Hnefatafl

How to play

The Norse king's table, a family of games played across Viking-age Scandinavia and the British Isles long before chess arrived. You command the king and his four guards at the centre of a 7×7 board; the AI's eight attackers start along the four edges. Slip the king to any corner to win.

Rules

  • Every piece moves like a rook — any distance in a straight line, but never through another piece.
  • Only the king may stop on the central throne or an edge corner; your guards may pass through the empty throne but not land on it.
  • Capture an enemy piece by flanking it between two of your own pieces (or a piece and a corner/empty throne) in a straight line.
  • Slip the king onto any corner square to win. If the king is surrounded on all four sides, the attackers win instead.

Tips

The king is only captured when hemmed in on all four sides, so a king sitting on the board's edge is still safe from capture — but you still need to reach a corner. Clear an escape lane while your guards screen the attackers from the king's path.
