The Sámi tafl of Lapland, the best-recorded of all — Linnaeus sketched its rules in 1732. On a 9×9 field the king and eight defenders stand against sixteen Muscovites. Pieces move like rooks and capture by sandwiching.
Rules
You play the defenders; the Muscovites (AI) move first.
Tap the king or a defender, then a highlighted square to slide it there in a straight line — only the king may rest on the central throne.
Trap an enemy between two of your pieces (the empty throne counts as one side of the trap) to capture it.
Get the king to ANY square on the outer edge of the board to win — the raiders must build a complete ring to hold him in.
Tips
With edge-escape, every side of the board is a goal — spread the threat. Push the king toward whichever edge the raiders have thinned, and remember the empty throne behind you can help you capture a raider that strays beside it.
