How to play

Dou Shou Qi, the beloved Chinese "animal chess". Eight beasts from Rat to Elephant rank each side; a stronger animal eats a weaker — but the tiny Rat can drown the Elephant. Rats swim the rivers, Lions and Tigers leap them, and traps sap an animal's strength.

Rules

  • Tap one of your animals, then a highlighted square to move it one step up, down, left or right.
  • Capture an enemy of equal or lower rank: Rat < Cat < Dog < Wolf < Leopard < Tiger < Lion < Elephant.
  • The Rat is the one exception — it alone can capture the Elephant, but a Rat in the water can't capture (or be captured by) a piece on land.
  • Only the Rat can enter the rivers; the Lion and Tiger can leap a river in one move, unless a Rat sits in their path.
  • Any enemy piece standing on one of your ✕ traps loses its rank and can be captured by anything of yours.
  • March a piece into the AI's den 巢 to win.

Tips

Your Rat is the key piece — it takes the Elephant, blocks enemy Lion/Tiger river-jumps by sitting in the water, and can sneak toward the den. Lure AI pieces onto your traps, where any of your animals can capture them regardless of rank.
