The real game of Japanese chess: nine ranks and files, twenty pieces a side, and the signature rule that makes shogi unique — a captured piece joins your hand and can be dropped back onto the board as your own. Pieces promote deep in enemy territory for extra power.
Rules
Tap one of your pieces, then a highlighted square to move it there.
Tap a piece in your hand (below the board), then an empty square to drop it onto the board as your own.
Moving a piece into or out of the far three ranks may let you promote it for extra power — you'll be asked when it's optional, and it happens automatically when required.
Capture the AI's King (王) to win. (Simplified: play continues until a King is actually taken, rather than full check/checkmate detection.)
Tips
The Gold and Silver generals guard your King — don't trade them away early. A captured piece joins your hand and can be dropped back onto almost any empty square as your own, so material you win often comes right back onto the attack.
